Sustainability

I’M A PLEDGED GREEN MAKER

I am proud to have signed the Green Maker Pledge with MAKE Southwest;

I’m committed to reducing my environmental footprint and adopting practices

that protect our planet. Here are some ways that I am doing this –

Printing

  • My eco prints are printed by a local eco-friendly printing house where sustainability is at the core of everything they do. Printed using Vegan friendly, biodegradable and compostable inks, powered by green energy. Stock is FSC Certified and part of the Carbon Capture scheme. All packaging has been carefully chosen with the environment in mind – opting for biodegradable, plastic free alternatives where possible.
  • For smaller print runs I support my most local print house, using FSC certified stock and a shorter commute.

Packaging

  • I’ve made a switch to use biodegradable cello bags for all eco-friendly printed items. (I will however continue to use up previous non biodegradable stock that I have left).
  • My business stamp was made by a Green Stamp Company who specialise in environmentally-friendly, oak-mounted rubber stamps.
  • Packaging where ever possible will be recyclable.

Supporting other small businesses

  • For purchases such as cello bags and packaging I try where possible to buy from other small businesses on sites such as Etsy. Etsy offsets carbon emissions from delivery and packaging on each purchase.
  • The candles I hand paint are from a Dorset small business who create beautiful hand dipped minimally processed candles 100% from their Dorset beeswax.

Repurposing/reusing

  • lots of the picture frames I have are lightly used thrifted ones.
  • Items that I hand paint have often had another life, such as beautiful mushrooms which I make in to hand painted decorations.
  • I repurpose others excess stock such as ribbons, envelopes, labels and card.
  • The display stands I use at markets have been thrifted and modified.
  • I try and reuse packaging where possible.

Carbon Reduction Plan & SME Recommendation Report

I recently completed the Decarbonisation Programme with Netshift / Social Impact Support to calculate the carbon footprint of Katie Moore Studio, and was provided with a Carbon Reduction Plan & SME Recommendation Report.

The report forms part of a broader initiative designed to guide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the early stages of their decarbonisation journey. The programme also supports Devon local authorities in working towards their Net Zero targets across council areas.

The purpose of this document is to outline the studio’s current carbon footprint, highlight key ‘carbon hotspots’ within the business, and suggest practical pathways for reducing emissions through tailored recommendations.

Sustainability remains an ongoing focus for me — As a small business, I’m continually working to strike a balance between operational realities and sustainable practices. While constraints can make some remaining immediate changes challenging, I’m committed to making thoughtful, incremental improvements and sourcing greener alternatives wherever possible.

If you are interested in reading the report, you are welcome to reach out to me via the contact page.
